Buhari to constitute c’ttee on communal clashes

President Muhammadu Buhari has commenced consultations for an inclusive stakeholder committee that will thoroughly interrogate issues that fuel communal conflicts across the country. Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said the committee will be charged with a mandate to proffer lasting solutions to age-long disagreements that have claimed lives and property.

With particular focus on the Tiv/Jukun relationship in Benue and Taraba states, he said the President was disturbed by communal clashes that have destroyed many lives and property, altered the destinies of families, and raised the profile of insecurity in the country by promoting generational tensions. The committee, which will work with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, will include traditional rulers, religious bodies, (specifically the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs), age groups, market/farmer/hunters associations, local and state government officials, and relevant security agencies.

He said President Buhari believes that Nigeria’s cultural diversity remains her greatest strength when properly harnessed and harmonized with a collective vision for unity, peace and shared prosperity. He called for more patience as the government identifies and works towards creating more understanding.

Banditry: Troops kill 8 bandits, arrest 17 collaborators in Sokoto

No fewer than eight bandits have been killed and 17 other collaborators arrested by troops of Operation HARBIN KUNAMA III under the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto. The General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Division, Maj.-Gen. Hakeem Otiki, told the newsmen in Sokoto on Saturday that those apprehended were bandits’ informants and logistics suppliers.

Otiki said five bandits’ camps and 25 motorcycles were destroyed in the operation. He commended members of the various vigilante groups and local hunters for their support to troops operating in their villages and communities.

Otiki explained that the operation which was flagged off on April 1, 2019 in Zamfara, involved military activities in Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states. According to him, the exercise has instilled confidence in the locals to remain in their villages and continue with their normal lives as well as facilitated the return of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their homes. STATEMENT BY H.E. MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, CHAIRMAN OF THE ECOWAS AUTHORITY OF HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT AT THE
55TH ORDINARY SESSION OF THE ECOWAS AUTHORITY OF HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT ABUJA, NIGERIA
29TH JUNE 2019

Protocols: It is with great pleasure that I warmly welcome you to Abuja on behalf of the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the occasion of the 55th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). 2. To my colleagues, let me again reiterate my deep appreciation for the confidence placed on me to lead our sub-regional organization, as Chair of the Authority during the last one year. I sincerely thank you for the valuable support extended to me throughout the period. Excellencies Heads of State and Government, Distinguished Guests, 3. As West African leaders, we are delighted with the platform provided by our organization to hold regular consultations. We also note with satisfaction the effective functioning of our Institutions which further bind us together as member states. 4. The fact that we have reconvened here today, to discuss developments in our sub-region, bears testimony to our sustained commitment to the consolidation of our integration as a Community. I acknowledge and commend the giant strides made by ECOWAS in this regard. 5. I also commend our individual and collective efforts towards the promotion of good governance, peace, stability and socio-economic development in our sub-region. We must remain focused on our collective endeavour to make the sub-region an area of peace and security. 6. This is an essential prerequisite if we are to attain the primary objective of our organization which is, to “promote cooperation and integration, leading to the establishment of an economic and monetary union in West Africa, in order to raise the living standards of its people and contribute to the progress and development of the African continent”. Your Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, 7. Despite the overall appreciable progress we have made, particularly in the field of political governance, our sub-region continues to face considerable security challenges. We are all witnesses to the recurring incidents of inter-communal clashes, herders-farmers conflicts, banditry and terrorist attacks in all our countries. 8. These threats, you will agree with me, have consequences on the peaceful co-existence between our communities and peoples as well as their livelihoods. 9. This unrest also undermines all our efforts in achieving full regional integration. It is, therefore, necessary that we act collectively to end this menace in the interest of regional stability and wellbeing of our people. 10. Let me offer, on behalf of all of us, our sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims of terrorist attacks, banditry and inter-communal clashes perpetrated by some misguided elements in our societies. We shall not relent in our efforts to protect our peace loving people and their properties, while vigorously sustaining the war against terrorism and criminality. Excellencies Heads of State and Government, 11. Taking into account the transnational nature of the threats confronting us, the need for the adoption of a common strategy at the national and regional level to combat them, has become imperative. By so doing, we will reinforce our actions and resources for a more effective response to protect our citizens and secure our common space. 12. While I acknowledge that several initiatives and measures have been taken in our respective countries recent developments have shown that we must cooperate more effectively to achieve our goals. 13. We should send a strong and unified message to the perpetrators of violence that we are resolute in our collective determination to confront and defeat them. 14. I would like to renew our gratitude to all our colleagues who have skilfully conducted the political mediation missions we entrusted to them. Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, 15. As we strive to create a secure, stable and prosperous environment in West Africa, we must also intensify our efforts to ensure sustainable economic and social development in our sub-region. By doing so, we will be able to tackle poverty and youth unemployment and contribute to our sustained stability. 16. Several issues relating to different policies, programmes and projects are itemized for discussion during today’s meeting. 17. As is our custom, the 55th ordinary session will also consider these matters from the reports on today’s agenda. 18. Considering the high level of interest you all attach to regional cooperation and integration, I am confident that our Summit will witness robust discussions and produce sound decisions. 19. Let me at this point, take this opportunity to renew, once again, our sincere appreciation to the African Union, the United Nations and all our bilateral and multilateral partners for their sustained cooperation and assistance. We value their partnership. 20. I will conclude my remarks by wishing us fruitful deliberations. I hereby declare open the 55th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. I thank you for your attention.

SSS begins nationwide crackdown on individuals posting inciting materials on the Internet

On Wednesday, the State Security Service announced a nationwide crackdown on individuals allegedly caught posting inciting materials on the Internet.

The SSS said it had recently observed that some social media users were distorting Nigeria’s history to promote ethnic violence and tip the nation into crisis, a development it said must be urgently reversed through state interference.

SSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said in a statement said that some “unpatriotic” Nigerians have been using social media platforms to make “unguarded public statements and/or use the social media platforms to instil fear in the minds of citizens”.

“These are reflected in the misleading statements and articles being circulated among unsuspecting members of the public. Such inciting materials oftentimes are designed to make or convey false accusations by one group against the other. They also resort to skewing historical narratives to suit their objective of masterminding ethnic violence in the nation. So far, some of the culprits have been arrested,” Afunanya said.

The SSS said it was “determined to ensure that the tribal chauvinists and mischief makers do not continue to exploit socio-political differences and Internet platforms to threaten the peace and stability of the country.” The service said regional and community elders should not only desist from making “unguarded statements” but also help shut down all ethnically-charged rhetoric by persons in their respective domains.

The SSS vowed to “sustain the apprehension and prosecution of defaulters,” because it would not relent in its quest to prevent crimes and keep Nigeria as an indivisible country.

Unknown gunmen abduct another village head in Katsina State

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Bature Mai’unguwa, the Village Head of Labo in Batsari Local Government Area, by unknown gunmen.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gambo Isa, a superintendent of police, confirmed the abduction to journalists on Wednesday in Katsina. He said that the victim was abducted on Tuesday afternoon while working at his farm at the outskirts of the village, near Rugu forest.

‘’Operation Puff Adder responded to the distress call, but since it was far inside near Rugu forest, before they could reach, the hoodlums had already fled into the forest. We are following a lead that may assist us in rescuing him.

‘’The command is calling on communities in the affected areas to always form groups while going to their farms and inform security agents for security backup. We are reminding people of the state government’s directives on the suspension of farming activities around Rugu forest areas.

“Members of the communities are reminded to put security of their lives first before embarking on any activity,’’ he said.

The gunmen invaded the village on motorcycles around 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, shot sporadically to pave way for their operation, abducted the village head, and fled into the forest.

The district head of President Buhari’s community in Daura, Musa Umar, was kidnapped by gunmen on May 1.

You are a drowning man, stop lying to Nigerians, they are not stupid - Etinosa calls out MC Galaxy over IG live nude video saga

MC Galaxy in a recent interview admitted that the March 15th Instagram nude video saga with actress and popular Instagram comedian, Etinosa was a planned work.

Back then, Etinosa made news after she appeared completely naked on MC Galaxy's lG live video. She received a lot of backlash from Nigerians and at a point, came out to apologise and state that she regrets her action.

She has now reacted to MC Galaxy's recent claim that it was pre-planned. Etinosa dragged the heck out of MC Galaxy. calling him a 'drowning man' and a 'loser'.

Stop lying to Nigerians. They are not stupid. This is the last I will say on this hurtful issue. It hurts me a lot and you can tell by the harsh stupid way I cursed an innocent child because his father won't stop throwing it at my face. However, after that happened I tried talking to a real therapist and it really works- I have made significant progress.i am working really hard to be a better person. I no longer feel rage or pain when fans troll me about it.

I laugh. Moving on process isn't as easy as it sounds on tv. By 9pm on Africa Magic Urban you would see me again looking all perfect and talking perfect too but it's not as easy as it looks on tv so no one should make it more complicated by adding lies. You can't try to win Nigerians by lying to them. An effective damage control should avoid lies(MCG you would know this but you are an illiterate surrounded by illiterates)

I have said my truth. I was caught at an unguarded moment, someone I called my friend recorded me and sent it to blogs. I take full responsibility and am trying to move on. I advice all parties involved including the nude video viewers to move on. Thanks.

FG threatens corrupt lawyers, bankers and brokers with sanction

The Federal Government has said it will henceforth insist on enforcement of sanctions by professional bodies against lawyers, bankers and brokers indicted for corruption.

President Buhari said this in Abuja on Tuesday during the Democracy Day anti-corruption summit titled, ‘Curbing electoral spending: A panacea for public corruption,’ organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He stated that his administration was taking stock of the progress recorded so far by the anti-graft campaign and devising new strategies to address existing challenges.

Buhari explained that the outcome of the process, which had been initiated by the Presidential Advisory Committee and all anti-corruption agencies in the country, would serve as the basis for more effort by his administration to, among other things, strengthen the capacity of the EFCC and other anti-graft bodies.

The President said, “I am pleased to inform you that this process has already started with the recent interaction by the Presidential Advisory Committee and all anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria.

The outcome of the interaction, among others, shall serve as the basis for a more concerted effort by this administration to close existing legislative loopholes, facilitate collaboration with the judiciary and strengthen the criminal justice system, enforce effective asset declaration by public office holders, ensure sanctions by professional bodies against lawyers, bankers, brokers, public officials, and other individuals facilitating corrupt practices and ensure comprehensive support and protection to whistle-blowers, witnesses and victims of corruption.”

Buhari added that his government would insist on unconditional return of looted assets kept abroad and strengthen international cooperation through information and mutual legal assistance.

Who do you think will win the Ballon d'or? Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Van Dijk?

After Portugal's victory at the maiden edition of the UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE, Ronaldo might be the odds on favorite to win the 2019 Ballon d'or award surpassing Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Before the final, Van Dijk was the odds on favorite, as his successful season with Liverpool culminated in him winning the PFA player of the year award, but his failure to lead his team to glory, has reduced his chances.

Messi, always a favorite enjoyed a superb season scoring 36 La Liga goals in just 29 starts as Barcelona were crowned champions of Spain. He unfortunately didn't win the UEFA champions league as his team were humiliated by Liverpool, but he still won the European Golden Shoe for the third consecutive season.

Messi heads to this summer’s Copa America looking to finally win silverware with Argentina
Other contenders include Mo Salah of Liverpool, and Saido Mane of Liverpool.

So LIBers, who do you think will win this year's Ballon D'or award ??

Alleged N25bn fraud: EFCC withdraws from former governor, Danjuma Goje’s case

On Friday, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation took over the case of alleged N25 billion fraud filed against Former Gombe State Governor, Senator Danjuma Goje from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

For almost eight years, the EFCC had been prosecuting the former governor until Friday. The case, which is before Justice Babatunde Quadiri of Jos Federal High Court II, has even gone to the Jos Court of Appeal over the remaining two counts out of the 21 charges filed against him by EFCC.

The Appellate Court is yet to fix a date for the hearing of the appeal. When the case came up for an emergency hearing before Justice Quadiri, the EFCC Counsel, Mr. Wahab Shittu, told Court that the agency was withdrawing from the case and handing it over the office of the Attorney-General for continuation.

“My Lord, this case was earlier adjourned for June 20 for the continuation of hearing, but then we are here today on the latest development on the matter. We as EFCC counsels are withdrawing from the matter and handing it over to the office of the Attorney-General for continuation with the prosecution. As you can see in court today is a State Counsel from the AGF’s office to formally take over this case from us,” Shittu declared.

Responding, Mr Paul Erokoro (SAN), did not object to the EFCC withdrawal and handing over of the case to the Attorney-General. “My Lord, we do not object to the anti-graft agency’s withdrawal and handing over the prosecution to the AG’s office,” Erokoro said.

Pius Asika, Counsel from the office of the Attorney General announced his appearance for the case. Asika then applied for an adjournment to enable him to prepare for the case proper “having come into the matter today (Friday)”. Justice Quadiri then adjourned to the case to June 21, 2019 for continuation of hearing.

Woman who claimed husband wanted to use her for rituals is a psychiatric patient

It appears all is not as it seems regarding the trending story of a woman who claimed her husband wanted to use her for rituals after she was found tied up at the back of an SUV.

In the video shared online, the woman, who was rescued by passersby who heard her screaming for help from the moving car, is seen with her arms tied behind her back while her child is seen crying in the passenger's seat.

The woman claimed her husband has used two of their kids for rituals and he was trying to do the same to her and their last child.

She said: "My husband and his friend were on their way to use us for money rituals before we were rescued in Surulere, Lagos."

The husband and his friend, who was in the car with them, were beaten up by passersby after they heard the woman's story.

However, a LIB reader who claims to be close to the situation said the woman has a mental illness and was being taken to the Psychatric hospital in Yaba after she had a relapse.

The husband was reportedly interrogated at the Itire Police Station and was released when the police were convinced no crime had been committed.

The woman is reportedly now at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, receiving treatment for her mental ailment while the husband is also in the same hospital receiving treatment after he suffered an eyelid laceration while being battered by passersby who thought he was a ritualist.

NNPC recruitment: Candidates share hopes, frustration

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recently announced that its ongoing recruitment which kicked off via nationwide advertisements in the national dailies and online media on Wednesday, 13 March, 2019, has advanced with conclusion of the shortlisting of candidates for an aptitude test. According to the corporation, the Phase One of the ongoing recruitment which ended with the closure of the application portal heralded the Second Phase involving shortlisting of qualified candidates who would be invited to participate in a computer-based aptitude test.

Phase Two of the recruitment which commenced from 27 March, 2019 ended with the shortlisting of qualified candidates. The shortlisted candidates have been scheduled to sit for Computer Based Testing (CBT) today 1st June, 2019 across the country. “Notification of progression to the next stage has been sent to all shortlisted candidates via text and e-mail,” NNPC said.

The CBT would be administered in about 50 centres across the country, and those who emerge successful in the test would subsequently be invited for oral interviews for final selection. Following the conclusion of the shortlisting exercise, many applicants who were either fortunate to have been shortlisted or not shortlisted have continued to express mixed feelings over the exercise. The categories of positions NNPC advertised are: Graduate Trainee; Senior officer and Supervisory Cadre; and Managerial Cadre. Daily Trust Saturday spoke to candidates who applied for a position. An applicant, Osaheni Pius-Usiobaifo, said he applied 18th March and had high expectations. “I felt disappointed when I wasn’t called for the aptitude test. I have a Masters degree,” he said. “I felt extremely disappointed after hoping for a positive outcome. Amidst all, I think the selection was fair to an extent. They said the all candidates must be with a second class upper, of which I got a lower degree. Notwithstanding, I thank God for some of my friends that were selected,” Pius-Usiobaifo said. But another applicant, Mariam Abdullahi, said she is sure deserving candidates got selected. “I mean, the NNPC is a world-class organization; so even if I don’t make it, I know it’s not because of shady dealings or whatever. They have solid professionals there. It would be nice to get picked, though, because I’ve always wanted to work there.” An applicant who simply identified himself as Kelvin said, “I wasn’t surprised I didn’t get called. We all know how difficult it is to get in there, you must know someone or know someone who knows someone, someone of influence to even stand a chance.” Social media has also been agog with reactions following the announcement by NNPC that it had concluded shortlisting of successful candidates for the test. While expressing frustration over not being invited for the test, an applicant, Fatima Abdullahi tweeted via @missphonecian: “I applied, with a first-class degree in administration, and I was not selected because I am 36 years of age? I graduated in 2014. So the brilliant talent of my likes are eagerly disqualified just because we exceed 30 years?” However, other applicants who received invitations to the test expressed hope and appreciation over the process. “I was shortlisted and FCT is the location I pick for the CBT,” announced an applicant Abdullahi Abdulmumin via the handle @abdmu123. Adeyemi Rotimi tweeting via @cationdavid001 on May 23 said, “I was also shortlisted. I received the message yesterday through email and text today. May Almighty God speak for me and show me grace in Jesus name.”

Nigeria risks losing $9bn over failed contract

Nigeria risks losing assets worth $8.9 billion in Britain and America as a UK firm fighting a lengthy court case against it begins moves to seize its assets. Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) wants Nigeria to pay $8.9 billion damages awarded to it by an arbitration tribunal in London.

The UK engineering and natural gas firm is reportedly lobbying Britain and America to persuade Nigeria to pay the money or to enable the company to seize Nigerian assets. But Nigeria is vigorously countering the moves, fighting the case in US and UK courts. A staff of the law firmCurtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, with offices in the United States and Britain, told Daily Trust on Sunday in London that they are representing Nigeria in the case.

The lawyers had argued in court that enforcement of the award against Nigeria would violate the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. But P&ID argues that Nigeria forfeited its rights to immunity when it struck an agreement with the company. It says it will pursue enforcement of the award. The case, which has been fought in various courts in the two countries and in Nigeria since 2012, followed a dispute between Nigeria and the British Virgin Islands-registered firm over a failed gas project. The firm, co-founded by a former Irish band-show manager, accuses Nigeria of breaching a contract it entered with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources in 2010 to build a gas processing facility in the Niger Delta. The deal was struck during late Umaru Yar’adua’s administration as part of the government’s plan to develop Nigeria’s energy infrastructure to enhance electricity supply. But the deal collapsed during Goodluck Jonathan’s regime and the firm sued. However, Jonathan’s government, towards its tail end, reached an out-of-court settlement to pay the firm $850 million. The matter was passed on to the then-incoming government of Muhammadu Buhari. But, according to a report by Premium Times, Buhari’s government reneged on that agreement. The firm returned to court and won. It was awarded $6.59 billion and subsequent favourable judgement saw the amount rising to $8.9 billion, including accumulated interest. In February, solicitor general Dayo Apata assured Nigerians that the government would “vigorously” defend its interests. He said Nigeria would take necessary legal measures to resist the enforcement of the award. But as the legal battle continues, a hedge fund, managed by VR Capital Group, buys a large stake in the UK firm strengthening its power. Media reports say the company has hired lawyers and lobbyists in the United States and Britain to pursue its case. P&ID was formed in 2006 by two Irishmen, Brendan Cahill and Michael Quinn. Mr Cahill had earlier issued a statement saying that the firm, supported by its investors, would work to ensure the enforcement of the award. Related
