Why Nigerians feel less safe

Insecurity is one of, if not the most glaring and much talked about thing in Nigeria today. Acts of insecurity occur on daily basis throughout the country. Right thinking and sane Nigerians are really concerned about this ugly trend. This post digs into the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria, its effects on the country and proffers/suggests ways out of this nightmare.

The causes amongst so many include fundamentally:
• Illiteracy
• Unemployment/joblessness
• Poor leadership
• Porous nature of our boarders
• Proliferation of arms
• Non-compliance with the rule of law.

The effects are also here:
• Underdevelopment
• Poverty
• Hunger
• Insurgency
• Militancy
• Youth restiveness
• Kidnapping
• Armed robbery
• Fear
• Drug abuse
• Political thuggery etc.

As part of the way out of this, this post suggests that ‘career’ (technical) education be emphasized rather than the ‘degree’ (non-technical) education. Civics as a subject should be restored in the primary school curriculum; the country be restructured as demanded by most of the populace, community policing introduced and supported; rule of law and quality leadership firmly established and spirit of nationalism enshrined in the minds of the citizenry.

WHAT IS YOUR OWN VIEW AND WAY OUT….?

The simple rules they use to scam us

For those of you who are interested in Nigerian politics, the rule is simple.

Never hit the big guys, focus on the little people, they are your mugu. They are so powerful but they don’t know it. And that’s why it is so easy to scam them, like what the politicians has done in the last 48 years.

As the trillions of naira is budgeted for the 180 million people, your job as a politician is to positioned yourself between the budget and the 180 million people who need it. It’s simple, just be on the compete from the budget to your interest group and to your bedroom.

But Nigerians only talk, their anger only extinguishes in the bear parlors and the news papers desk.

Your try and steal a loaf of bread out of anger they will leach you. But still, lot’s loots billions from the national treasury and they will crown you with chieftaincy tittles of the red carpets.

If there ever riot it only lead to killing each other, never rise against the politicians.

NOTE: I’m not telling you to be like them, I’m telling you to be different from them.

Yeah…! Keep thinking that if this writer also have the opportunity they have, he will also do the same. But the truth need to be told, we should know who they are…!

You may not like me, but you can’t ignore me.

File photo: Armed bandits

Suspected armed bandits Saturday evening killed at least 10 people in an attack on Ruwan Tofa community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara, Daily Trust gathered. Ruwan Tofa community is located at least 7 kilometres west of Dansadau town.

The armed criminals had tried to attack the community more than six times this year, according to a resident Dahiru Abdullahi. Residents told Daily Trust that the armed men arrived at the community on dozens of motorcycles, encircled the village and started firing at the residents.

“They [bandits] laid siege around 5pm when most of the able bodied men were on their farms working. “Some of the residents that remained behind in the community fought back but were overpowered by the bandits’ superior fire power. “They shot dead several people and made away with herds of animals. “They spent about three hours in the community before they withdraw. “The injured ones, about 16 of them, are receiving treatments at a medical facility in Dansadau town,” he added. However, the spokesman of the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, said those killed were vigilantes known as Yan Sakai and were ambushed by the armed men when they were trying to recover the animals rustled by the gunmen.

Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime

Poverty has become the parent of revolutions and crimes

Today in my country (Nigeria), politics have become an investment where the rich invest in to make profit while the poor lives in poverty and starvation not minding what kind of developments will they bring to their mother-land.

My people do you know that unemployment, corruption, non-diversification of the economy, income inequality, laziness, and a poor education system are some of the key factors contributing to poverty in Nigeria?

  • What are you doing about these factors?
  • What a way forward do you ever think for these factors?
  • Why are we still revolving around these same factors for many years and nothing has been done about it.
  • Do you know that you are dying slowly as these factors are killing your mother-land slowly?
  • Have you ever wakeup in the morning and thought of how to save your country?
  • Do you know that there people who cannot even afford one-square meal for their families?
  • Do you see how marketers are inflicting the prices of commodities as they wished living the poor to suffer it?
Though you are not to blamed because we the masses also sold our right at the expensed of N50 to elect you into offices, but they are some who voted you heartedly without collecting a penny from you hoping you may fulfill their dreams. Why do you let their hopes down?

Sometimes I do feel as if I maybe opportune to rule this country for just five months I would ask God to use me to make at least %45 positive impact to my mother-land. I believe with DEVOTION everything can be change.

Fear the day you will be question for your own deed by your creator.

Fear the day, the mother of revolutions and crimes will triggered the mind of her children to come after you.

You know the key solutions to all these factors causing downfall to our noble mother-land (Nigeria).
I leave it unto you, SOLVE IT to avoid temptation.

Let me tell you, “The first step toward avoiding temptation, is recognizing our human tendency to be tempted by our own fleshly desires”.

Remember, temptation is a given, so don’t be surprise by it. Rather, expect to be tempted. Be prepared for it……

Nigerian Lady Who Accused D’banj Of Alleged Rape Demands Public Apology

Seyitan Babatayo, the young lady who alleged that Dapo Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj, raped her, have demanded that the Nigerian entertainer publicly apologize.

Recall that the whole saga started after Nigerian model scout, Benjamin Ese, alleged that Dbanj had raped his friend on December 31, 2018, at Glee hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said this on Instagram on June 3 without disclosing the friend’s name. According to Ese, his friend had attended a party in Lagos and was sighted by Dbanj who wanted to have sex with her. He went on to reveal how she was allegedly raped by the musician.

Thereafter, Ms. Babatayo revealed herself and demanded a public apology from the ‘Kokomaster’, D’banj, through her lawyers, Ojoge, Omileye, and Partners. The official demands contained in the letter addressed to the singer include a personal letter of apology to their client, as well as a public apology to her, to be published in two national dailies.

An elusive interview with Premium Times on Wednesday, however revealed that D’banj’s lawyers said his decision on the matter will determine how far they will take the legal battle.

“The ball is in Mr. Oyebanjo’s court. He can either decide to apologize and let the whole matter die down. He can continue to act as if he is not concerned about the situation and he can also fire back. Whichever stand he takes, our legal team is always ready to provide the necessary re-action to the action and to ensure that justice is done in the case.”

They also maintained that they will be settling the matter legally because they are not after “the social media or celebrity kind of justice.”

“However, we need to state that our client is not concerned about the media in the pursuit of her justice. All she wanted is to heal from her hurt and live the normal life she was living prior to the unfortunate event of December 31, 2018,” they reportedly said.

IGP orders probe of rape allegation against D’Banj

D'Banj

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, yesterday ordered a probe into the rape allegation against Nigerian singer, Oladapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, following a petition written by Seyitan Babatayo’s lawyer, Mr. Tommy Ojoge-Daniel, who accused D’banj of raping her in 2018. In a letter signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IG, DCP Idowu Owohunwa, an account was given of how Seyitan’s friend, Benjamin Ese in a Twitter thread early June told the story of how D’Banj allegedly raped Seyitan in a hotel in December 2018.

The experience, Ese said, had caused Seyitan some trauma. One month after Ese’s tweets, Seyitan came out publicly to present herself as the lady who was allegedly raped by D’Banj.

Dbanj, however, denied the allegations and asked Seyitan to make a public apology and also pay him N100m in damages. On Tuesday it was claimed that Seyitan was arrested by the police and detained for over 24 hours on the order of D’banj. Her friends claimed the officers made her delete all chats, social media posts and other vital information from her phone. A petition to remove D’Banj as a United Nations youth ambassador has been signed by almost 16,000 people. The petition which was started on Change.org by one E. Popoola hit 15, 541 by 6:17pm yesterday and aimed to reach 25,000. It called on the UN and UN Women Africa organisations to distance themselves from his actions following an alleged sponsored kidnap of one Seyitan who accused D’Banj of rape and sexual assault which happened in 2018. The petitioners also asked the UN to support and lend their influence in helping Seyitan get justice. “We also call the attention of brands such as Heritage Bank Africa, One Africa, CSA Global and other establishments associated with Mr. Oyebanjo to end their commercial relationship with him and stand in support of victims of sexual violence,” they said. D’banj has won several music awards, including Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, and Best-selling African Artiste at the 2014 World Music Awards.

UK seeks justice for rape victims in Nigeria

The United Kingdom Government has restated its commitment to seek justice for rape victims in Nigeria. This came as the world commemorates the annual international day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on Friday, June 19.

“We want to eliminate the culture of impunity around such horrific crimes, strengthen justice for survivors and hold perpetrators to account,” a statement from British Deputy High Commission said on Thursday. In Nigeria, the cases of rape and other forms of sexual violence have continued to rise in conflict areas, as well as across the country in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures put in place by the federal government to stem its spread.

The statement said the UK is working alongside organisations, civil society actors and individuals in partnership with the Nigeria Federal and State governments, to continue to challenge such harmful sexual crimes perpetuated against victims in conflict, and to support victims and survivors, especially women and girls particularly in the North Eastern part of the country. Speaking at a virtual meeting organised by the British High Commission to chart a way forward with sexual violence activists in Nigeria earlier in the week, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing CB said: “Tackling sexual violence in conflict and non-conflict areas, requires action from a broad coalition, including government, law enforcement, civil society and local communities. “As an old and close friend of Nigeria, the UK remains active in supporting ongoing efforts to reduce sexual violence in conflict in this country.” The UK will also launch, later in the year, the Murad Code, a global survivor-centred code of conduct that will prevent the re-traumatisation of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, the statement signed the commission’s Public Relations Officer Amaka Eze added. Named after Yazidi Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad, the code will uphold international standards and best practice when documenting conflict-related sexual violence to strengthen investigation into of sexual violence crimes, and support the UK’s efforts to strengthen justice and accountability for all survivors, Eze added.

Think Tank drums support for state of emergency on sexual violence

The African Legal Think Tank on Women’s Rights ( ALTOWR ) has declared support for the Civil Society Organizations, activists and the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure that violence against women and girls is duly and promptly addressed. In a statement issued on Thursday, ALTOWR expressed concern over the spate of Sexual and Gender Based Violence towards women and children in the country, urging the government to take decisive action to end the menace.

The statement which reads in parts said, “The African Legal Think Tank on Women’s Rights ( ALTOWR ) is following with tremendous concern the rise of systemic violence towards women and children in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “We condemn the horrendous episodes of rape, domestic violence and abuses, and join in solidarity the coalition of Civil Society Organizations calling for the declaration of a State of Emergency on SGBV in Nigeria”.

It said recent data showed that violence against women and children has pervasively increased during the current novel COVID-19 pandemic, with serious consequences for the victims, the families, the community and the country at large. “Cognisant that the lockdown has forced victims to remain isolated with their abusers, as data from service providers have reported a drastic increase of cases. “We wish to duly emphasize that the Pandemic has weakened an already enfeebled system attributed to a pervasive culture of impunity, which is unable to properly address violence against women and children, with devastating consequences towards the pre-existing inequalities and vulnerabilities, further affecting the most vulnerable groups, including women and girls with disabilities in conflict-affected states, refugees and internally displaced. “The weak system of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is further affected by the societal, cultural and religious response to the cases of violence towards women and children, which often lead to victim-blaming. “Such attitudes have led to devastating effects in ensuring access to Justice for the victims, further exacerbated by the political discourse” the statement added. It further stated that survivors of SGBV are often unable to report cases due to the stigma and fear of discrimination. “We wish to reiterate that the police should not be used in any form or manner as a tool of oppression and power abuse, serving a privileged elite to silence, threaten and intimidate women. “This repeated high-handedness by the police, instead of thorough investigation further deters survivors of SGBV from reporting their abusers. “We duly recall to state prosecutors that they are entrusted with representing the State and the public interest before the legal and judicial institutions, and as such they shall ensure that Justice is done for the victims of such horrific crimes”.

Bayern Munich win eighth straight Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich players celebrate

Bayern Munich secured an eighth straight Bundesliga title on Tuesday as Robert Lewandowski’s first-half strike proved enough for a nervy 1-0 win at Werder Bremen. Hansi Flick’s Bavarian giants went into the game seven points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have three matches remaining, and extended that gap to an unassailable 10-point advantage. It is Bayern’s 30th German top-flight title in total and they remain on course to win the treble. They face Bayer Leverkusen on July 4 in the German Cup final and also hold a 3-0 first-leg lead over Chelsea in the Champions League last 16.

The win at the Weserstadion was Bayern’s eighth consecutive victory in all competitions since the German season restarted last month following the coronavirus lockdown. Lewandowski scored his 31st league goal of the campaign shortly before half-time, but Bayern had to withstand a period of sustained late pressure after left-back Alphonso Davies was sent off with 11 minutes left. Relegation-threatened Bremen threw on 41-year-old striker Claudio Pizarro, but the former Bayern man was denied a dramatic 90th-minute tap-in by a stretching Manuel Neuer. Bremen, who have spent more seasons in the Bundesliga than any other club, remain in the relegation zone.

Messi starts as Barcelona resume against Mallorca

Fears over Lionel Messi’s fitness were eased when the Argentine star was named to start for Barcelona in their first match in three months against Real Mallorca on Saturday. Messi had caused concern by missing three training sessions this month with tightness in his thigh but rejoined his teammates on Monday and was named in the starting line-up by coach Quique Setien.

It will be the first time the 32-year-old has played since he scored the winner against Real Sociedad on March 7. That victory sent Barcelona back to the top of the table, two points ahead of Real Madrid.

Messi has scored 24 goals in 31 appearances for Barca this term. La Liga returned on Thursday as Sevilla beat Real Betis 2-0, bringing an end to 93 days without matches while the coronavirus suspension was in place. Teams will play their remaining 11 fixtures in less than six weeks, with the season scheduled to finish on July 19. (AFP)

Beijing district in ‘wartime emergency’ after virus cluster at major food market

A Beijing district put itself on a “wartime” footing and the capital banned tourism and sports events on Saturday after a cluster of novel coronavirus infections centred around a major wholesale market sparked fears of a new wave of COVID-19, reports Reuters.

Forty-five people out of 517 tested with throat swabs at the Xinfadi market in the city’s southwestern Fengtai district had tested positive for the coronavirus, Chu Junwei, a district official, told a briefing. None were showing symptoms of COVID-19, he said, but added that 11 neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the market, which claims to be the largest agricultural wholesale market in Asia, had been locked down with 24-hour guards put in place. “In accordance with the principle of putting the safety of the masses and health first, we have adopted lockdown measures for the Xinfadi market and surrounding neighbourhoods,” Chu said.

The district is in a “wartime emergency mode,” he added. The closure of the market and new restrictions come as concerns grow about a second wave of the pandemic, which has infected more than 7.66 million people worldwide and killed more than 420,000. They also underline how even in countries which have had great success in curbing the spread of the virus, clusters can sometimes easily arise.

The entire Xinfadi market was shut down at 3 a.m. on Saturday (1900 GMT on Friday), after two men working at a meat research centre who had recently visited the market were reported to have the virus. It was not immediately clear how they had been infected. On Saturday, market entrances were blocked and police stood guard. Beijing authorities had earlier halted beef and mutton trading at the market and had closed other wholesale markets around the city.

They plan for more than 10,000 people at the Xinfadi market to take nucleic acid tests to detect coronavirus infections. According to the Xinfadi website, more than 1,500 tonnes of seafood, 18,000 tonnes of vegetables and 20,000 tonnes of fruit are traded at the market daily. A city spokesman told the briefing that all six COVID-19 patients confirmed in Beijing on Friday had visited the Xinfadi market.

The capital will suspend sports events and tourists from other parts of China, effective immediately, he said. Beijing’s Yonghe temple and National Theatre also announced they would close from Saturday, and the city government said it had dropped plans to reopen schools on Monday for students in grades one through three because of the new cases. One person at an agricultural market in the city’s northwestern Haidian district also tested positive for the coronavirus, Chu said. Highlighting the new sense of alarm within the city, health authorities visited the home of a Reuters reporter in Beijing’s Dongcheng district on Saturday to ask whether she had visited the Xinfadi market, which is 15 km (9 miles) away.

They said the visit was part of patrols Dongcheng was conducting. And following reports in state-run newspapers that the coronavirus was discovered on chopping boards used for imported salmon at the market, major supermarkets in Beijing removed salmon from their shelves overnight.

That concern also spread to other cities, with a major agricultural wholesale market in Chengdu, the capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan, saying it would remove salmon products from its shelves from Saturday. In Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, a local association of restaurants said it would halt the serving of foods containing raw seafood or animal products.

Some Beijing residents, including a man shopping at a Carrefour supermarket in Fengtai district, said they were confident authorities had the situation under control. “If I were worried, I wouldn’t come here to buy meat. I believe it has been quarantined,” said the man, who gave his surname as Zhang.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde replies rape apologist who said women encourage rape by appearing sexy

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde this evening replied a rape apologist who stated on Twitter that women encourage men to rape them by appearing sexy.

The actress had earlier taken to her Twitter handle to advise rape victims to speak out whenever such a thing happens to them.

''I have just watched a disgusting Rape video.pls if you have been raped or know anyone else who has. These are New times!Everyone is on your side now!Pls speak out! If you dont report it, the demon(s) might never be caught and will Rape others! Do it for yourself, do it for others'' she tweeted

A Twitter user with the handle @FaradaySamuel took to comment section of Omotola's post to say the women should stop appearing sexy so they don't get raped.

''That's a good point. But I want you to emphasize that women should de-sexify which means they should lay less emphasis on appearing sexy. This is a truth women don't want to hear. Women are helping to arouse the sexual demon in men and they go for the most vulnerable for satisfcn'' he tweeted

Omotola in her reply pointed out that the twitter user sounded like a beast/rape apologist. She said he will now be watched closely as the new law from NAPTIP says anyone who gives excuses for rapists will be arrested.

''You sound like a beast / Rape Apologist! Be careful there’s a New decree from @naptipnigeria for anyone giving ANY EXCUSE for a crime! You’re now going to be watched closely.'' she tweeted
