Actress, Oloruntimilehin Bukola, popularly known as Kiitan Bukola, has revealed that her rape ordeal at the age of 10 had a long-term effect on her sexual life.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, 

she said, 

“I cannot remember what age I started taking alcohol but I started drinking beer in secondary school. My mom did not know about this habit and my father did not live with us. Drinking is an addiction for me. I find it difficult to make love without getting high, because of my rape ordeal. That way, I can do whatever I want. Also, I have to really share a close bond with my partner before I can get intimate. Sometimes, I feel irritated, angry and paranoid for no reason. I still get flashes from the incident. I can picture his face clearly. However, I am really trying my best to stop my drinking habit. People close to me know that I always have (alcoholic) drinks around me”.

“I did not want to tell anyone my story at that time because of the fear of being stigmatised or ridiculed. That was what prompted me to make a movie about my experience 23 years later. I want victims to have the courage to speak out. The incident happened at Oke Bola in Ado Ekiti”.

“Meanwhile, I had another bad experience with a guy some years back. We were in a long-distance relationship but he came to Nigeria after a while. I had gone to see my mum in Ondo State and he was in Akure (the state capital) at the time. We spent some time together and when it was getting late, I asked him to drop me at the park. However, he cajoled me and we stayed back in his house. He tried to have sex with me and when I refused, he slapped me very hard. I told him it was the time of my menstrual cycle. But, he insisted that he wanted to confirm. He later confirmed and apologised. I did not sleep till 5am when I left his house the next day. This happened in 2006 or 2008. I have been more careful since then.”

The actress who urged victims to speak out regardless of when the incident happened also said she wished she met her rapist before he died. She added, “When I told my rape story on social media, I found out that the guy had died. I was told he was killed during a robbery. I was hoping to meet him and I would have paid him back for what he did to me.

“I knew the identity of my rapist, so I told my family friend about it, who then informed me that he (rapist) had died. Another person also confirmed the story to me after I spoke out about the incident. I think my career also helped me to speak out because I could make a film out of it.”

Their remains were on Saturday moved to the National Mosque and the Nigerian Air Force Protestant Church venues of prayers.

Their bodies were later moved to the National Military Cemetary interment ceremony.

The burial ceremony started around 2.50 pm with a profile of the late COAS read.

The fallen officers were also honoured with 21-gun salute.

Buhari, He is not my in-law

 

President Buhari has said the Gimba Yau Kumo, declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over an alleged $65 million fraud is no longer his son-in-law.

LIB on Friday reported that the ICPC had begun a manhunt for Kumo over alleged fraud while he was the Managing Director, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). Read here.

A statement released last night by the President’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, said the latest move by the ICPC to declare Kumo wanted, notwithstanding his connections, has shown the seriousness of the Buhari administration to fight corrupt practices in the country.

The statement in part reads 

“A running story to the effect that the ICPC has declared ‘an in-law of the President’ wanted in connection with fraud involving the large sum of money, USD65 million to be exact.

This should normally be an affirmation that our anti-corruption agencies/institutions are truly independent and allowed unfettered freedom by the President; which is in fact the case. That a state institution can issue such is a measure of the administration’s commitment to accountability, equality and justice.

To set the records straight, the person declared wanted by the ICPC is not an in-law to President Buhari. While at some point in time, the said fugitive from justice had been linked to a family member in marriage; that relationship has ended some years ago.

It is therefore unfortunate to bring the Presidents family into this case. It is in our view an attempt to generate views and sell copies of sensational reporting. 

The President’s position at all times is that the law be allowed to take its course. As is well known of him, President Muhammadu Buhari will not provide any cover for crime, no matter who is involved.”

Kumo, a former Managing Director, FMBN, got married to Buhari’s daughter in October 2016 in Daura, Katsina State. According to the commission, Kumo is wanted alongside Tarry Rufus and Bola Ogunsola over alleged misappropriation and dispersion of national housing fund.

FCT Minister Bans Eid Prayers On Open Grounds

 

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Bello, has banned eid prayers at the National Eid prayer ground...

As part of efforts to contain the outbreak of COVID-19, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Bello, has banned eid prayers at the National Eid prayer ground along the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway.

According to a statement by the Minister’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, the decision was arrived at a meeting of the FCTA and a delegation from the FCT League of Imams Initiative.

Ogunleye said the delegation led by its Chairman, Imam (Dr) Tajudeen M.B Adigun, met Bello to discuss the modalities for holding eid prayers for the upcoming Eid el-Fitr celebrations.

“All worshippers are enjoined to hold eid prayers outdoors within the premises of their neighborhood Juma’at mosques. Indoor worship are to be limited to less than 50% of installed capacity.

“Religious authorities are advised to regulate the flow of people entering and exiting places of worship. All non-pharmaceutical intervention protocols of facial coverings, physical distancing and hand washing are to be observed

“All other eid celebrations and activities should be confined to homes as all public parks, recreation and entertainment centres are to be closed,” the statement read.

The minister thanked the religious leaders for their cooperation in the battle against COVID-19, stressing that having gone through a first wave of the pandemic and a second wave that caused more fatalities, it was imperative to prevent a possible third wave as is being witnessed in some countries across the world.

“Consequently, based on presentations made by officials of the Health and Human Services Secretariat of the FCTA and the Implementation Guidelines for Phased Restriction of Movement issued by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 on Monday. 10th May 2021, we came up with the guidelines,” Bello said in the statement.

Speaking on behalf of the League, Adigun said “In Islam, you listen to experts, those who are specialists and those who have actually discussed with us are experts in the field of medical sciences. In Islam, you also abide with the commands of leadership.

“Based on this and what we are convinced of, we urge Muslim Ummah to also respect this stand of the Administration of the FCT by observing our Eid prayers within our localities.”

New marriage law that will allow women marry more than one man, South Africa considers

 

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has proposed a new law that will allow women marry more than one husband, in the same way that polygamous men are allowed to marry more than one wife.

 

The 67-page policy document also called Green Paper on Marriages, stated that the current marriage act does not promote equality.

The policy document highlighted that the current marriage legislation is discriminatory as it does not recognise Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Rastafarian marriages. The policy document also called for polyandry to be legally recognised as a form of marriage.

The Green Paper proposed three new marriage regimes to bring equality in marriage laws. One of these options is a gender-neutral marriage regime.

It read;

 

“This would accommodate both polygyny and polyandry

“…Therefore all marriages, whether monogamous or polygamous, could be concluded regardless of the sex or sexual orientation of the person."

South Africa’s Ministry of Home Affairs appears to favour the option for a gender-neutral marriage regime that allows both polyandry and polygyny. The Ministry wrote;

 

“The political appetite of the country to confront the challenges of the current marriage statute will be tested through these options. However, if Section 9 of the Constitution was to be implemented in its entirety, option 3 will tick all the boxes.”

The Ministry however noted that the option for polyandry has ruffled feathers and South Africa’s traditional leaders have vociferously opposed the proposal, claiming that a woman being married to more than one husband is an “unacceptable practise because it is not of African origin.”

It added; 

“Ironically, stakeholders who believed in the practice of polygamy … were opposed to the practice of polyandry.

“This is the beginning of a crucial public discourse that will re-define the concept of marriage in South Africa. 

“The process will unearth issues that may make some of us uncomfortable, but will encourage dialogue within the South African and international communities.”

South Africans have until the end of June to comment on the department’s proposals.

Boat mishap in Niger state, 30 dead, 65 rescued

 Thirty bodies have been recovered while 65 persons were rescued by local divers after a boat mishap in Tijana in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

A local boat carrying about 100 people, including women and children, capsized midway into the journey, at about 6:00pm, on Saturday, May 8.

A search and rescue operation began immediately and 30 bodies have been recovered so far. Local divers are still in search of the remaining bodies.

The boat reportedly capsized due to a heavy windstorm caused by the rain that fell on Saturday evening May 8.

Among the victims were some returnees who had earlier fled their homes with their children due to bandits attacks.

Husband buried with a live snake

 

A woman, believed to be Ghanaian, was filmed putting a live snake in her husband's casket before his body was committed to mother earth.

In a video shared online, the bereaved wife is seen with the snake around her neck as she speaks to her husband's corpse.

She then removes the snake from her neck and places it with her husband's body in the coffin.

A background voice narrating the reason for the wife's decision said the snake bit the tongue of the deceased, killing him. Hence the wife decided to bury her husband with the snake that killed him.

According to online reports, the dead man used to play with snakes and one of his favourite pet snakes bit his tongue when he was trying to put it into his mouth.

Two students arrested for alleged burglary and theft on campus in Bida poly

 

The Security Unit of The Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger state has arrested two students and one other for alleged burglary and theft.  

Parading the suspects at the Administrative Block of the school on Tuesday, May 4, the Chief Security Officer, Alhaji Hussaini Mohammed, said that they were arrested following persistent cases of burglaries and theft on campus.

Alhaji Mohammed identified the suspects as David Abel, an ND II student of the Architectural Department and Mark Saidu, ND II, Urban and Regional Planning Department.

The third suspect, Adamu Ahmed, who operates at Panteka in Minna, often bought stolen properties from the students. 

The suspects took the security personnel to different places they have burgled within the school. 

Abel said his role was to move the stolen properties out of the school premises while Saidu conveyed them from Bida to Minna after every operation. Ahmed confessed to only buying the stolen items from the students.

Items recovered from the suspects included electronic appliances such as air-conditioning, plasma television, printers, home theater, industrial fans, and stabilizers.

The suspects have been handed over to police for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Chief Security Officer warned criminals to stay away from the polytechnic, assuring that efforts are ongoing to arrest all those involved in criminal activities in the school.

Virginity in this culture is held in high regard so the girls must abstain from premarital sex. And if a girl is found to be not a virgin before marriage, she is to face the death penalty or ostracisation from society.

Additionally, the Ankole people consider the slim physique unattractive. To them, fat is simply sexy. So when girls get to the ages of eight and nine, they are required to go through a fattening process where they are force-fed with, millet, beef, and milk. This is usually done to speed up the weight gain of the girls so they can attract a husband.

Banyakole women

The Banyakole marriage involves several ceremonies including a Giveaway period know as “Kuhingira” where the relatives and friends of the bride present her with gifts such as cows and other food items to take to her matrimonial home. Then, after 10 days, a ritual called the Okukoza Omunuriro is carried out. The ritual involves the bride lighting her first fire in her new kitchen.

On the day of the wedding, a feast is organized at the bride's home where the father is to slaughter a bull while at the groom’s home there is also a feast to consummate the marriage. But first, there has to be one last traditional ceremony, a ceremony that involves two tests that must be carried out by the bride’s aunt.

Since virginity is the marriage standard for the girls of the Banyakole tribe, every bride must be tested by her aunt to confirm her virginity before the marriage. If the bride passes the virginity test, it's presumed she has no knowledge of sex or how to please her new husband sexually.

So, the second test involves the bride’s aunt testing the sexual ability of the groom by having sex with him. During this act, she also learns all his sexual tricks as well as favorite styles so she can gift her niece with pointers on what the goom likes sexually. This is believed to help the bride better please her husband in the marriage.
